Overview
This $11M improvements project constructed a new southbound on-ramp off US 101 to promote better access to and from NBCUniversal Studios. Located in a busy corridor on US 101 in downtown Los Angeles, the project required significant coordination with Caltrans, the City of Los Angeles, and adjacent property owners.
The project also widened an existing southbound on-ramp; constructed a five-span, cast-in-place slab bridge with Tubex Pile extensions; and improved Universal Studios Boulevard. Construction elements included a soldier pile wall, a soil nail wall, and Type 1 retaining walls; rapid set Portland cement concrete (PCC) approach slabs; jointed plane concrete pavement (JPCP); new and modified existing drainage systems; traffic signal and lighting improvements; metal beam guard rail (MBGR); hot mix asphalt (HMA) paving; numerous utility relocations; significant traffic control; and coordination with Caltrans and the City of Los Angeles.
This four-stage construction involved significant traffic control, ramp closures, and lane closures on US 101.
Constructed within Caltrans right-of-way, this project was administered per Caltrans methods and procedures and required coordination with Caltrans Traffic Maintenance Center (TMC) and the Caltrans Oversight Engineer.
MNS provided construction management, construction inspection, and office engineering services for the project.
