Overview
Construction of the City of Newark’s first dog park at Newark Community Park was a significant investment in the future health and well-being of the community. As one of the fastest growing communities in Northern California, the City’s ability to provide safe and accessible recreational and exercise facilities for our four-legged residents and their owners was greatly impacted. The new small and large dog parks with multiple surface types, agility equipment, and shaded community seating area ensure dogs and their owners can exercise and socialize in a safe and accessible outdoor environment. NewBark Dog Park provides amenities such as separated fence-enclosed areas with double-gated entrances and exits for small and large dogs, shaded seating, agility equipment, and water for both canines and owners.
The City of Newark’s mission was to create an environmentally responsible park facility by maximizing the recreational experience while providing a “green” solution. This green solution included management of the site’s construction materials, systems, and park management. Minimizing energy consumption and the carbon footprint through maintenance practices was also key. City staff made a conscious decision to require park equipment be manufactured from recycled plastic material. In fact, all of the dog agility equipment installed in the dog park was manufactured from 99.9% recycled post-consumer plastic, containing 64 plastic water bottles per pound. In addition, recycled plastic lumber used in all of the benches, tables and waste receptacles installed at NewBark Dog Park was also derived from post-consumer plastic bottles, resulting in a product that is more than 90% recycled.
