The American Public Works Association (APWA) Southern California Chapter awarded the MNS Transportation Engineering team a 2015 BEST Award for the Las Flores Canyon Creek Park Improvements in the City of Malibu! MNS won this prestigious award for the Under 50,000 Population division of the Traffic, Mobility & Beautification category.
The Las Flores Canyon Creek Park Improvements project involved two elements: a pedestrian bridge design and advanced technology septic system.
MNS provided design services for a 100-foot span prefabricated pedestrian bridge that spans an environmentally-sensitive creek in Las Flores Canyon Creek Park, located in Malibu’s Coastal Development Zone. The new bridge provides easy and safe access for visitors. MNS obtained an exemption from the Army Corps of Engineers jurisdiction by selecting construction methods that were not intrusive on the creek environment. A 3D simulation of the bridge was created to assist the City in explaining the visual impact of the bridge to the Coastal Development Commission, City Planning Commission, and the general public. The bridge and ramps were lowered and angled to blend in with the existing topography and natural aesthetic of the park.
The design also includes a technologically-advanced septic system that treats and disperses the park’s restroom effluent into a shallow irrigation system that waters the park’s vegetation, protecting the nearby blue water stream.
