Overview
The City of Dublin has opened its new all-abilities playground, Imagine Playground at Dublin Sports Grounds. The playground was designed with the intent to provide a play structure and facilities that can be enjoyed by people with all kinds of special needs.
The $5.06M project included the design and construction of an all-abilities playground, an all-inclusive picnic area, upgraded landscape, parking facilities, and pathways to improve accessibility and connectivity to other park features including the sports fields and a new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant restroom facility. Assemblywoman Rebecca Bauer-Kahan secured $1.4M of the needed funds through a California Department of Parks and Recreation grant.
Prior to the design of the playground, the City engaged with individuals and organizations who worked with people with special needs including Dublin Unified School District Special Education teachers, sports field user groups, Little League Challenger Baseball, and the School of Imagination. Pop-up booths were also set up at City of Dublin events in late 2018 to gain input from residents as to what they would like to see in the new all-abilities playground design.
Additionally, a new public art piece, “Conversation,” by artist Barbara Grygutis, has been installed near the playground. The piece is intended to emphasize our uniquely human ability to transcend difference and find common ground through conversation. It will be illuminated each evening.
